is a hand-signed Jack Kirby autographed bookplate for The
Art of Jack Kirby,
published in 1992 by Blue Rose Press.
Saturday and Sunday, November 7 & 8 1992, Jack did a two-stop art
tour to celebrate the publication of The
Art of Jack Kirby.
On November 7 he was in my store, 21st Century Comics in Orange,
California, and on November 8 he appeared at Golden Apple Comics in
Los Angeles. These bookplates were created as part of that tour. Jack
signed them in advance of the appearances, and did not sign items
during the appearances. The bookplates were given to anyone who
purchased a hardcover of the book during the tour.
recently found a few of these bookplates that were never distributed,
and am offering one here. The bookplate measures 5 1/2″
wide and 4 5/8″ tall, and looks brand new. They got put into an envelope and set aside for many years (decades, really).
also posting a picture of Jack and me at 21st Century Comics on that
day, in front of a Kirby poster. I will include a copy of this
picture with the bookplate. I will also include a note, hand signed
by me, that explains the origin of these bookplates and authenticates
Kirby is one of the most important creators in the history of comics.
His autograph is highly sought after, and although he often signed
for fans, his autograph remains less common than that of many other
creators because his death in 1994 came before the era of the “buy
a signature” craze at conventions.
there’s no confusion, this is the bookplate only. It does not include
a copy of the book, which is out of print, although they do show up
on auction and bookseller sites from time to time. There are some for
sale on that place named after the river in Brazil.
